Pangasinan State University (PSU) and the Provincial Government of Pangasinan are strengthening their collaboration on priority research, extension, and innovation initiatives aimed at uplifting local livelihoods and securing a better future for the province’s students and workers.
During a recent meeting with Honorable Governor Ramon “Mon-Mon” V. Guico III, University President Dr. Elbert M. Galas, together with Dr. Razaele G. Resultay, Vice President for Research, Extension and Innovation, and Engr. Rex Basuel, PSU-DOST NICER ASIN Center Program Leader, presented multiple proposed projects and innovations. Among these is the deployment of the game-changing Electrodialysis Reversal (EDR) salt technology.
Developed at the PSU-DOST ASIN National Research and Development Center in Binmaley under the DOST NICER program, the EDR machine produces high-quality salt in mere hours.
Notably, the machine is now ready to be deployed for salt making, serving as a modern, weather-resilient, and highly efficient alternative to the traditional way of producing salt at the salt farm in Bolinao, Pangasinan, owned and managed by the provincial capitol.
The proposal was championed through a shared vision that homegrown research, extension, and innovation will directly strengthen the livelihood of fellow Pangasinenses and enhance opportunities for local students.
Through this initiative, PSU is offering this technology to the province to help produce massive amounts of salt, aiming to boost the Pangasinan economy and uplift the local salt farming industry by aiding conventional practices through this advanced, science-driven technology.
With this collaboration, Pangasinan aims to become the flagship proving ground for this innovation. Once the model is perfected locally, it will empower regional salt farmers with modern tools before being expanded to the rest of the country and international markets.
Complementing this effort, the freeze-dry food innovation, a vital development designed to assist families struck by disasters was also discussed during the meeting. This technology ensures the preservation of nutritious food with an extended shelf life, providing an immediate and reliable food security solution for communities during emergencies and calamities.
Moving forward, PSU, through the leadership of Dr. Galas, will continue to collaborate with the province of Pangasinan for any further research, extension, and innovation initiatives spearheaded by the University, ensuring a sustained partnership that continually drives the province’s progress.
